The Only Real Innovation in the Ferrari Luce Is a Palm Rest

The Ferrari Luce launched with the kind of feature list that gets written up everywhere — new display architecture, new materials, new performance figures. All genuinely impressive. All, in the end, incremental.

The one part of the car that's actually innovative barely gets a mention: the palm rest sitting under the display.

Everything Else Is Refinement, Not Innovation

Everything else on that car is Jony Ive and Marc Newson doing what they always do — refining, simplifying, removing. That's excellent work, and it takes real skill to execute. But refinement and innovation aren't the same thing, and the industry tends to talk about them as if they are.

The palm rest is different. Nobody put "reduce screen jabbing while driving" on a Product Requirement Spec. It came from watching someone actually try to use a touchscreen in a moving car and noticing a problem nobody had bothered to name yet. That's not a spec-driven solution. It's an observed one.

## Why Management Struggles With This

This is the part people without a design background tend to struggle with. They want to know how many hours it will take to produce the innovation. What the hourly rate works out to. How many prototypes it will take to produce the innovation.

Those are reasonable questions — if you're measuring incremental improvement. "This part is 20% lighter." "This system is 52% faster." "Here's the 3,000 CAD hours and 7 prototypes it cost to get there." Predictability rewards that kind of accounting, because the outcome was never really in doubt once the brief was written.

Innovation doesn't work like that, and trying to cost it the same way misses the point entirely.

Where Innovation Actually Comes From

The hours behind something like the palm rest weren't spent modelling. They were spent observing — living inside a problem that hadn't been solved yet, building the intuition and empathy that eventually surfaces as one obvious-in-hindsight detail. Most of the work was never in the object itself. It was in the years of noticing that came before it.

This is the core of what separates a genuinely innovative outcome from an incrementally improved one: the level of innovation in a solution is directly related to how unpredictable that solution is. The more predictable it is, the more likely it's an incremental gain on something that already exists. The less predictable, the more likely it came from observation, empathy and intuition rather than a spreadsheet.

This isn't a case for design over engineering, or the other way round. Engineers work from predictable data to improve existing performance attributes, and that work is essential. It's a different kind of value, generated a different way — and it needs to be resourced and measured differently too.

The Only Real Measure

The only real measure of a great innovation is what happens after it lands — the sales it generates once it's in the market. Everything before that — the intuition, the experience, the hunches built from years of observation — is intangible. You can bill for it. You just can't measure it in the way you'd measure a CAD hour. But that's where the value — the innovation — actually comes from.
