It's also exactly why it's defensible. Predictable engineering improvements are the easiest thing for a competitor to reverse-engineer. A genuinely novel combination, arrived at through observation nobody else was making, is where the IP actually sits — and IP is the only thing standing between a product and a cheaper copy six months later.
Design and engineering aren't in competition here. They produce different kinds of progress. But a business that only invests in one of them should know which kind of advantage it's giving up.
