The Problem With OpenAI's Device

Jony Ive's first product for OpenAI just leaked: a screen-free speaker with a built-in camera, described internally not as a speaker but as "a computer built for AI." The design world has reacted the way it always reacts to an Ive project — with a mixture of anticipation and scrutiny. But the reaction misses the more interesting question, which isn't about the object at all. It's about the problem.

As an industrial designer Sydney based, I spend most of my working life on exactly this question: not what a product looks like, but what problem justifies it existing in the first place. The OpenAI device is a useful case study, because it sits at the exact fault line between two very different ways innovation actually happens.

Innovation Starts With a Problem, Not a Technology

There's a persistent myth that innovation is generated by clever people staring at new technology until inspiration strikes. In my experience — and in the history of industrial design — it rarely works that way. Innovation tends to arise from one of two directions, and they are not the same thing.

The first is a genuine, unsolved user problem. Tony Fadell's Nest Smart Thermostat is the clean example. Fadell didn't start with a piece of clever hardware and go looking for a use for it. He started with a visceral, unanswered problem — the clumsy, inefficient way people were controlling temperature in their own homes — and built the solution around that problem. The innovation was the depth of understanding of the problem, not the cleverness of the components.

The second direction is a new technology in search of a problem. Apple's mouse is the textbook version of this. The core technology was first developed at Xerox PARC, where engineers had built something genuinely novel but had no clear idea what to do with it commercially. Steve Jobs' contribution wasn't the invention — it was the recognition that this technology was the answer to a real, if not yet fully articulated, interface problem. That's a different, and rarer, skill: pattern-matching a solution to a problem nobody had cleanly named yet.

Why the Ferrari Luce Struggled

Jony Ive's Ferrari Luce is a useful counter-example, and it's worth understanding why it drew as much criticism as it did. The issue wasn't the quality of the design — the finish and precision were never seriously in question. The issue was the absence of a meaningful user problem for the design to solve. Automotive styling, and Ferrari's styling in particular, is an area the public holds enormous emotional attachment to. Without a clearly identifiable problem driving the design decisions, Ive was left exposed in territory where taste and heritage carry as much weight as function — and that's a much harder brief to defend.

Why the OpenAI Brief Is Different

The OpenAI device sits in more promising territory, and closer to Ive's natural strengths as an industrial designer. We genuinely do not yet have a good answer to how AI should exist physically in daily life — the interface problem here is real, current, and unsolved. That's precisely the kind of ambiguous, high-stakes brief where an industrial designer's tools — observation, empathy, unstructured discovery, intuition — tend to outperform a purely engineering-led, spec-driven process.

Whether Ive found the problem first, or the technology found him, is the thing worth watching. Whilst everyone else waits to see the solution, I'm far more captivated by the problem it's trying to solve — because that's where the real innovation, if it exists, will actually be found.

The Deeper Pattern in Product Design Consultancy

This is a pattern I see constantly in product design consultancy work: clients arrive with a technology, a capability, or a manufacturing process, and ask what can be built with it. The more valuable — and harder — conversation is the one that starts earlier: what problem, for which user, is genuinely unsolved right now. Innovation isn't a personality trait or a design signature. It's a process, and it starts in a specific place.
